Toilet learning can be supported with minor, temporary, inexpensive modifications to your existing bathroom. Some helpful adjustments are: Offering a potty chair if space allows. Modifying the full-sized toilet with a removable seat adapter. If the toilet is shared among the toddler and adults, the adapter will need to be removed after each use. Consider storing it in a plastic bin beside the toilet. Eventually, your child will be independent enough that she will remove the adapter from the bin, place it on the toilet, and use the toilet herself. It is very important that the adapter and the bin be continually disinfected by an adult. Providing a step stool for climbing onto the adult toilet. Providing a step stool for reaching the sink. (The same step stool can be used for both purposes if it is lightweight enough for the child to move it independently.) Providing a receptacle for soiled clothing. Children feel empowered when they have a choice of garments, but too many options can overwhelm or lead to distraction from the purpose of the bathroom. At school, children start each morning with a supply of clean clothing in their personal storage space: five pairs of underwear, two shirts, two pairs of pants, and two pairs of socks. If this supply is exhausted over the course of the day, we replenish with more clothing from their backpacks. Providing mild hand soap and a supply of clean hand towels. At school, we require children to wash their hands every time they are in the bathroom, whether they use the toilet or not. Children enjoy handwashing and feel capable when they are trusted with something as powerful as a faucet. Offering a supply of board books. Ideally, these books would be related to toileting and would be easy to sanitize. Stocking the bathroom with cleaning materials, stored out of reach of children. While toddler ‘folding’ starts out as just rolling things into blobs, the feeling of being included and valued is important and builds confidence. With practice and with lots of chances to watch you slowly fold things, his skills will develop. Store your child’s clothing in places that he can reach easily. Your child might have a beautiful dresser that’s easy for you to use, but if it’s too tall for her, she’d be even happier with some inexpensive plastic storage drawers arranged on the floor. When she puts her clean laundry away in the drawers, it will be messy. Clothes will come unfolded. There might be some frustration. That’s all part of it! Do everything you can to sit on your hands and let her do it. Consider buying a small laundry basket from the dollar store. Your toddler will feel really proud when carrying his own laundry from the dryer to the bedroom! While toddler ‘folding’ starts out as just rolling things into blobs, the feeling of being included and valued is important and builds confidence. With practice and with lots of chances to watch you slowly fold things, his skills will develop. Store your child’s clothing in places that he can reach easily. Your child might have a beautiful dresser that’s easy for you to use, but if it’s too tall for her, she’d be even happier with some inexpensive plastic storage drawers arranged on the floor. When she puts her clean laundry away in the drawers, it will be messy. Clothes will come unfolded. There might be some frustration. That’s all part of it! Do everything you can to sit on your hands and let her do it. Toilet learning can be supported with minor, temporary, inexpensive modifications to your existing bathroom. Some helpful adjustments are: Offering a potty chair if space allows. Modifying the full-sized toilet with a removable seat adapter. If the toilet is shared among the toddler and adults, the adapter will need to be removed after each use. Consider storing it in a plastic bin beside the toilet. Eventually, your child will be independent enough that she will remove the adapter from the bin, place it on the toilet, and use the toilet herself. It is very important that the adapter and the bin be continually disinfected by an adult. Providing a step stool for climbing onto the adult toilet. Providing a step stool for reaching the sink. (The same step stool can be used for both purposes if it is lightweight enough for the child to move it independently.) Providing a receptacle for soiled clothing. Children feel empowered when they have a choice of garments, but too many options can overwhelm or lead to distraction from the purpose of the bathroom. At school, children start each morning with a supply of clean clothing in their personal storage space: five pairs of underwear, two shirts, two pairs of pants, and two pairs of socks. If this supply is exhausted over the course of the day, we replenish with more clothing from their backpacks. Providing mild hand soap and a supply of clean hand towels. At school, we require children to wash their hands every time they are in the bathroom, whether they use the toilet or not. Children enjoy handwashing and feel capable when they are trusted with something as powerful as a faucet. Offering a supply of board books. Ideally, these books would be related to toileting and would be easy to sanitize. Stocking the bathroom with cleaning materials, stored out of reach of children. Tissues that pull from the top one at a time are the easiest for toddlers to manage. Most toddlers do not like the feeling of a runny nose and can be easily encouraged to get a tissue, wipe their nose, throw away the tissue, and wash their hands. At first, the kit might contain only a soft, child-sized toothbrush and a two-minute timer. Your child will try her best to do what you do, so demonstrate brushing your own teeth and tongue gently for two minutes. The renovation progress is moving so quickly at 1025 Dodd Road! Every time we visit the building, something major has happened! One of the most exciting moments was when we opened the front door and found large machinery inside! After the in-ground plumbing work was completed and the trenches were filled, the framing went up. The beauty of the framing is that we can feel the space taking on its intended purpose. Now we can walk through the future door of the Toddler Community space and clearly see the future features of the room! Probably the most important thing is the children's bathroom that is accessible from inside the learning environment. That ease of access is so important during the toddler years. Also, the room is the perfect size for toddlers. It is large enough to feel spacious and comfortable, but contained enough to feel homey. The massive interior window that will visually connect the entry and the toddler room will make the room feel even brighter and more cheerful. We're especially happy that the toddler playground will be accessible from within the room. We knew we wanted to preserve some of the character of the building, but we also needed to change the entire floor plan. For example, there was already a kitchenette, but it was located in a corner of the building. We want the kitchen to be in the center of the building so adults working in either future classroom can access it easily. There were numerous small offices, but we want two spacious learning environments. We enlisted the help of expert architect Peter Hilger, of Rylaur LLC. Peter found creative ways to reuse the quality wooden doors and lovely interior windows. They are going to give the finished building an airy and bright feeling. He also found a way to accommodate every change on our wish list: two spacious learning environments, a kitchen, a laundry room, an office/staff room, and children's restrooms that are accessible from within the learning environments. To bring the blueprints to life, Peter connected us with Steve Day at SullivanDay Construction.
